    I took my Tacoma in for some new suspension and a couple other mechanical replacements and my experience at Rod's exceeded my expectations. They were able to get me an appointment very quickly, they were extremely prompt on notifying me when when my truck was going to be ready and the report I was sent was one of the most comprehensive I've seen, included were pictures which made it extremely easy to verify that their inspection had caught some potential problems. Overall, I will be servicing my Toyotas here in the future.

    These folks have helped us day one and gave us the honest/direct help we were looking for. You'll pay a little more but it's because of their work warranty and their full emailed diagnostics on your car (with pictures). Anything they put in or do to your car is done with great parts and great service. If you're looking for reliable work and great parts to keep your car going this is the place, plenty of other shops you can go to that will do less for less.

    I’ve been taking my car to Rod’s for 11 years. I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. The current management is doing an amazing job. I can get my car in right away for minor to major repairs, which is important since I only have one car. They also provide courtesy loaner cars. Turnaround time on most jobs is quick. One thing that can hold it up is the time it takes to get the necessary part(s) and that is out of their control. A standout feature is their warranty. They guarantee their repairs for longer than any other shop I have done business with. I have had warranty work done at no cost already. Mechanics are very thorough when doing inspections. I would rather catch things before they become a problem and leave me stranded looking for a tow truck. As for customer service, I have mostly dealt with Zach in the last couple of years. He is friendly and very up front about repairs and cost. I trust him and value his opinion. Recently, I have also dealt with Brittany and she is also doing a great job in providing quality customer service.

    This was by far the best experience I’ve ever had at a mechanic shop. I have a Toyota so they had so much experience with my car and knew exactly how to take care of it. They were able to get me in quickly and when it came to discussing what needed to be repaired, Zach was amazing. He was honest and kind with me, helping me understand what was essential work. My car needed a lot done and I was from out of town so he helped work with my situation and prioritized my safety and what was best for the car. On top of that they got the work done within a day!     Rod's is such a great place to take your vehicle. They really know what they are doing, give you a detailed inspection and then talk through what work needs to be done. I recently needed to take my truck back in after having a few things happen unexpectedly with my kids in the truck and it freaked me out. As always, I was able to get ahold of Zach and he did such a nice job of calming me down. Zach is really an amazing employee. More than once he has personally tried to be sure I was satisfied with the work done and/or let me stop by and checked my 'check engine light'. It is very reassuring to have someone that you trust talking to you about your vehicle.

    I called up Monday morning to try to get my truck in for a alignment after I installed a lift kit over the weekend. I took my Subaru there for an oil change and inspection, and they did a thorough job going over my vehicle with me before a big road trip. They found some big issues that would have definitely left me stranded in an unfortunate situation had I not addressed them, and let me know what work I should expect in the future.     Update: On 10/25/25 my wife struck a deer in our 2018 Tesla 3, damaging the cooling system. We had it towed to Rod's on 10/28 for diagnosis and repair if possible as they advertised as a Tesla certified shop. (See attached) They replaced the broken coolant pipes and skid plate and then determined that the battery would not charge. On Rod's recommendation that the cost of diagnosing the and replacing/fixing the battery would constitute a total, we made an insurance claim. After the field adjuster report, Country determined that Rod's was not a certified Tesla repair shop and we would need to have it assessed at one. After the approved shop in Bellingham, No. 1 Automotive, would not look at it after an uncertified shop had worked on it. After a long back and forth with Tesla, we were finally able to get it towed Bellevue Tesla on 2/2/2026. They determined that Rod's had improperly fixed the coolant system and were able to recharge the battery at a cost of $1035, significantly less than the $2434.00 charged by Rods. We feel that the false advertising of a Tesla certification which resulted in faulty repair and poor diagnosis should be recompensated for the total amount we paid: $3,469.00 Warning to Tesla Owners: In October, we brought our 2018 Tesla 3 in after hitting a deer and breaking the coolant system based on a Google search of certified Tesla repair shops in Whatcom County. They diagnosed the broken coolant tubes, repaired the exposed tubes and the car would not re-charge. At this point they advised us that it would need a new battery and they would advise making anU[ insurance claim to total the vehicle. 2 months later, we were denied our claim as Rods is not a certified Tesla shop based on both the insurance company and Tesla's own recommendations. We moved the car to another certified shop in town who will not diagnose since Rod's looked at it first and they won't take the liability. In the meantime, Rods charged our insurance company for storage fees while we, not them, battled with insurance and Tesla. We are left storing the vehicle at our home while we try to find a shop willing to diagnose our vehicle and paying for a replacement vehicle out of pocket. Do not trust this company with your EV under any circumstances. We will be contacting the better business bureau as well.

    We’re sorry to hear you’re frustrated with the outcome of your insurance claim; however, there are several factual inaccuracies in this review that need clarification for future readers. Rod’s Japanese Auto Care has worked on Tesla vehicles for over five years and has full access to Tesla service information, online parts catalogs, and Tesla-specific diagnostic tooling. Tesla does not allow independent repair facilities to be “certified” for structural or aluminum body repairs unless they are manufacturer-approved body shops. From the beginning, we were transparent that we are not a Tesla body shop, and that any aluminum or structural repairs must be handled by a Tesla-authorized body facility. Your vehicle was brought to us for a coolant leak caused by a deer strike, which we diagnosed and repaired. After that repair, you informed us that the vehicle had been repeatedly charged while the coolant system was compromised, resulting in battery overheating. At that point, due to safety concerns and potential cost, we recommended involving insurance. An insurance adjuster was sent to our facility, reviewed the vehicle in person, and agreed that the high-voltage battery required replacement. The subsequent claim decision was made solely by the insurance provider and was outside of our control. The vehicle remained at our shop for an extended period while you worked directly with insurance. Storage fees were applied according to our posted policies after the vehicle was left on-site without authorization to proceed. We cannot control whether another repair facility chooses to accept liability for prior diagnostics, nor can we influence insurance approvals or denials. Those decisions are independent of our shop. We worked diligently and in good faith to assist you through a difficult situation. While we understand your disappointment with the insurance outcome, attributing responsibility to our shop for decisions made by insurance or other facilities is inaccurate. We stand behind our transparency, our workmanship, and our experience servicing Tesla vehicles.

    I recently bought a used sequoia that by all accounts seemed super clean for its age, minimal rust, clean history report, and on the lower end of mileage. It had some wear and tear on the interior so it was priced slightly lower than comparable ones, nothing out of the ordinary. After a clean initial inspection, I pulled the trigger, and immediately took it to Rod's for a deeper dive. Now I was expecting it might need some basic work, but it was a lower mileage Toyota, so I was not super concerned. After an oil dye test, we found it to be leaking oil from the upper oil pan. I have buddies with 200k+ mile tundras, and did plenty of research on what to look out for when buying a sequoia, this was not something I had ever heard of. Unfortunately, this is likely one of the most extensive repairs needed on a sequoia, and had a price tag to prove it. With a warranty on the vehicle, and a report in hand, I went back to the dealer to get everything sorted. To their credit (after performing their own dye test, which took some driving miles), they got me sorted with zero issue. However, before going back to the dealer to see if we would have a problem getting it fixed, and after driving ~ 500 miles to allow the dye to seep out of the problem area, Zach let me steal some time on his lift to educate me further. He and a technician took the time, at no charge, to point out exactly where the oil was leaking, and helped me get photos at the best angles. With extra photos, and clear visual of what was happening, it was hard to deny problem. Zach reached out via text a number of times to let me know he was happy to help in any way he could with the dealer, which was beyond what he needed to do. Once everything was fixed, I had the crew at Rod's do some routine work, as well as glance over what the dealer had done. Happy to report everything looked good. It is no understatement that they saved me a TON of money. I like to work on my vehicles when I have the time, but I am no mechanic, and don't have a lot of free time. I can confidently say the team at Rod's genuinely wants to do right by their customers, which is kind of rare today. The work is always done well, and at a reasonable price. Go here for work, you won't regret it. Thank you to the team at Rod's!

They both took the time to explain the issue we were having with our vehicle and talked through all the options with us. Very informative and transparent about what was needed, costs, etc. We even ended up not needing one of the services they originally thought we needed and, unlike other shops that would have done it anyway, they saved us several hundred dollars by not performing unnecessary services.     Overall, a good experience at this shop. I had just bought a car and had them inspect it. Turned out I was sold a car with some major issues like failing differential, and had to go through a whole hassle with a warranty company. Rod's was a VERY big help in dealing with the warranty company to get repair funds approved and did a lot of that leg work for me, which was incredibly appreciated. The one issue I did have was some lapse of communication: the approved repair funds were set at a certain amount, and Rod's told me they'd be in contact with me if there would be any needed repairs that exceeded funds from the warranty company. They only contacted me when repairs were all done, and only then did they tell me there was an additional $780 due. I was pretty disappointed in that to be honest; I do understand they likely wanted to make sure the car was as taken care of as possible, and when I said I was very caught of guard by the extra amount they did manage to bring it down to $500. They did great with repairs and I am definitely grateful that my car runs very well now and I would still recommend them; just note that communication may need to be very clear about expectations for cost.

    I was changing out my bulbs for my front blinkers and one of them broke. It was the basic bulb that's all glass with two wires at the bottom for the connection. Anyways, my back has been thrown out so I can't get down and take the bumper off and all that to get to the back of the lens, so I went into Rod's. It was really close to closing and I was just trying to see if it could be taken care of. The guy in the office said they only had one tech, mind you this is during all the flooding so I totally understood, but he offered to help and did. He pulled the broken bulb out, the LED bulb I wanted to replace it with couldn't fit because the previous bulb had melted the reflector and you could see that from across the room. He offered to try a regular bulb so that I could at least get back on the road and I said yes and that I would order a new headlight lens to replace it. He put it in and it's been working no problem. I was ready to go into the office afterwards to pay but he said don't worry about it. I told him I would order a new headlight lens and bring my car back. He was out there replacing something simple but was getting absolutely soaked by the rain and helped me out for free, it was cold and I'm a big guy so that's saying something, so yeah 110% I'll be going back.

From the start, Zach was incredibly friendly and professional. They were able to get my car in quickly for a diagnosis, and I was really impressed by how thorough they were. I love that they provide a complete analysis with pictures and detailed explanations. As someone who isn’t very mechanically inclined, it made it so much easier to understand what needed attention and why. Their communication was excellent throughout the entire process — I received reminder texts, updates on the diagnosis, the repair timeline, and pickup details. They got me in and out faster than I expected, and Zach made the whole experience easy and not intimidating at all.     Rods worked on my '95 Miata. As things wear out on the car I like to replace them with performance parts. Rods was willing to work with the performance parts I wanted for the car. I also appreciate their comprehensive review (with undercarriage pictures) of the car. I do most of my own maintenance so their review allowed me to fix things I could do myself and alerted me to additional items that they might need to take on. The customer service was very good and Zach was very knowledgeable about Miatas.

    I had Rod’s Japanese Auto Care replace a valve cover seal, adjust the valves, and replace the spark plugs on my 2011 Honda Accord. So that it would ready to trade in or sell. Zach was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful in that process and afterward in regards to assessing the vehicle’s value. This is a great place to take your car for needed work. The quality of their work is very good and far cheaper than the dealership. If I need other mechanical repairs done, this is where I’ll go.

    When our car broke down, I called Rod’s and spoke to Zack. He recommended a towing service (FAST TOWING) and they came within an hour. This was on a Friday evening. They drop the car off at Rod’s and the car was fixed by Tuesday. Top-notch customer service and the car is running great. I highly recommend Rod’s!

    Sorry in advance for the essay. I hate posting negative reviews about small businesses. I try to only post positive experiences recognizing that everyone has off days. However, the experience with this shop was pretty horrible, they had multiple chances to make up for it, and just treated me worse and worse each time I engaged with them. Feel somewhat responsible to warn folks about the experience I had. I also see that they have a decent amount of good reviews here, so maybe my experience is truly a one off, either way, I wouldn’t take your car here based on my experience. I’m also attempting to be quite civil - the amount of time and money I spent on this fix is appalling. I had a screeching noise coming from my rear wheel and needed it fixed before an upcoming trip. I brought it in on a monday, they had it till thursday. They sold me a bunch of maintenance services as well. The screeching noise ended up being a $674 repair, but my bill was $1,783 after they changed brake fluid, filters, and even $300 worth of new lug nuts they claimed I needed because my aftermarket rims were "unsafe" (the manufacturer who installed them says this isn't true, but i let this one go). When I got the car back, the screeching was still there, and actually worse. Over the next several weeks, I ended up making four separate trips back and forth (30-40 minutes round trip) because they kept claiming it was fixed when it wasn't. After a month of this back and forth, I finally gave up and took it to another shop. While they also had to work at diagnosing the issue (proving it wasn't straight forward), they eventually discovered that Rod's had overtightened some plates related to the brake so badly it took two hours just to undo their work (They charged me $295 in labor just to fix Rods mistake). Another $800 later from the new shop, my car was finally fixed. What should have been a $600-700 repair ended up costing me $2,500. When I asked for a refund for the failed repair (approx 600 of the 1700 I paid), they initially agreed but then stopped responding to my emails completely. I will note that they they provided a loaner car for two of the trips I made. I'd recommend going elsewhere. I’m sure they’ll comment here with a defense pointing the blame on me in some way. Seems like they have a history of that on the poor reviews. I imagine their comment will be similar to the last email they sent me: They basically said it was my fault because 1. I needed the car back quickly (they had it for 3 full days), 2. i took the car on the trip and this " caused sticking issue developed during that time, it may be unrelated to our adjustments that caused the rotor to be stuck on the vehicle" and 3. they didn't have enough gas to test drive. This is a comical response considering 1. they told me the car was perfectly safe to drive after the first two times I brought it to them. 2. I brought it back to them TWO MORE times AFTER the trip, and left it for days at a time with no word from them that there was a separate issue and 3. the funniest of all, the car didn't have enough gas... there's a pump quite literally 30 feet away from them (yes i would have paid). Anyway, their last email to me barely made any sense considering all the context, but it just went to show that they decided they weren't gonna make it right, and told me to get lost. At the end of the day, I brought my car in for a fix, they charged me for it, it wasn’t fixed, and they didn’t take responsibility/ownership for that.

We worked diligently to address the issue, performing multiple test drives (7+ miles each) and adjusting the parking brake to factory specifications, with detailed notes and photos to document this. Unfortunately, the parking brake lever later became seized, which prevented proper adjustments and contributed to the ongoing issue. Regarding the lug nuts, our recommendation was based on visible wear and safety concerns. You can barely even start to screw those lug bolts in by hand. We provided documentation and left the old lug nuts in the vehicle for you to inspect or consult with another professional. Safety is always our highest priority. While we strive to provide excellent service, communication became increasingly difficult due to the tone and nature of our exchanges. We value respectful dialogue and found it challenging to move toward a resolution under these circumstances, which is why we ultimately stopped responding. We regret that this situation ended poorly and encourage you to reach out if you'd like to revisit the matter. We value all feedback and use it to improve our service.

    I have had SO MANY vehicle issues in the last year.. I wish I had brought it to Rods the first time. This place clearly cares about the quality of parts used and long term vehicle care. I’ve never been spoken to with respect before by a mechanic. The woman who handles the warranty info was the kindest person and clearly explained my cars issues and options going forward. I ended up not getting the work done on my vehicle because it’s not worth all it needs done but I have no doubt that this place would fix it right the first time. I would choose this place again in a heartbeat.

    Very knowledgeable, thoughtful, kind, and flexible. they also are hybrid specialists. I couldn’t afford all of the recommended services at this time, so Jeffrey reshaped the work order based on what could be put off. The owner GM, Brittany, reviewed each repair with us in plain English, which was greatly appreciated, as it was a huge bill. My son is an auto mechanic in Canada and, although he was surprised I needed so much done, I sent him all the before photos, and he agreed the jobs needed to be done, saying that Ford’s maintenance schedule is more compressed. This was a secondhand car I had purchased and had owned for a year, and there was very little history. Upside: won’t need very many services for a couple of years.

    I highly recommend Rod's if you're in the Bellingham area and need any automotive repair work. I brought my 4Runner to Rod's after the dealership recommended several expensive services. Zach was great to work with and got me in quickly. They confirmed a few of the brake issues the dealership identified, found that a few things the dealership recommended didn't need repair, and identified a major issue that needed repair (front wheel bearing) that the dealership missed. The folks at Rod's were extremely thorough and documented all the repairs they recommended with videos and pictures. Zach even called to follow up after the fact which I appreciated. If I could give them more than 5 stars I would and I will definitely be bringing my vehicles here in the future.

    Last year I took my Acura MDX into Rod's for an alignment and to fix a pulsing I had in my front brakes. I worked in the automotive industry when I was young, doing brake jobs, oil changes and such. When I spoke with the service writer at Rod's I told him there was unusual wear on the right front brake rotor, and I suspected the rotor was damaged or warped and was causing the pulsing under breaking. Over $3000 dollars later, I had major suspension components replaced, oil change and a few other minor things done, but when I got into the car, the pulsing under breaking was still there. When I went back into Rod's, the service writer and told him the problem was still there and he said "Maybe it needs a brake job?". Frankly, at that point I was dumbfounded. They had my car for a couple of days, hitting me with a laundry list of recommend add-ons, collected on a big bill, yet failed to fix one of the main issues I brought it in for and now he was suggesting me bring it back in! He had no answer why they had not addressed the issue when they had the car. At that point, there was no way I was giving them the car back. I told the guy I would do the brakes myself. Unfortunately, I was due for back surgery, so we started using our second vehicle and limited the use of the Acura. Fast forward to now... Still in recovery from surgery, I decided to take the Acura into another shop in Bellingham. An hour after taking it in, I got a call saying the front brake rotors were warped.... EXACTLY what I told the service writer at Rod's I thought was the issue! It turns out the brake pads were fine, so all I needed was the rotors and the problem was gone. I am not sure who was at fault at Rod's, the service writer or the mechanic, but they truly dropped the ball at a time I really did not need the hassle. I literally told them what the issue was and yet they could not get it fixed. Pretty sad.

    Hey Woody, I see you were in almost exactly a year ago from todays date. You filled out one of our new customer sheets and at the bottom of this sheet it says "The reason the vehicle is here today is:____" and in the blank you wrote "ALIGNMENT EVAL / OIL CHANGE" Below that is "Descirbe any problems below or use the back of this paper if needed" - nothing is written below that line or on the back side of the paper. No where on the paper was it described about a braking issue. If you would like to see a copy of this, I can email it to you. For the alignment evaluation we found that the front lower control arm bushings were torn and needed to be replaced and then perform alignment. We did that along with an oil change, PCV valve, & Cabin air filter. I am not sure what advisor you talked to while you were here. I just am having a hard time seeing that we missed the brake rotors when it was never written down or put on the work order after a possible face to face discussion. I do see a note that we measured just one of 4 brake pads in the front and it had about 8mm left of brake pad material left on it. I wish you had called us sooner, came in, emailed, or reviewed us sooner so I could also go over the audio and video recordings we have in the office to double check what could have been missed.     We brought our car from Korea and were on our way to Alaska from Ushuaia at the tip of South America, after traveling around Eurasia and North Africa. And our car had a problem with the gear and transmission and couldn't move at all. We went to five repair shops around us, but they didn't even look at it and said they couldn't fix it. At the last stop, we finally met our savior. The staffs here slowly looked at our car and said they would fix it. We were really grateful. And even though it was their first time seeing this car, they fixed it very well. They were really kind, skilled, responsible, and had a sense of mission. Thank you again. We have now safely reached Alaska. We recommend this place to everyone 100%.

    I am a resident of Bellingham and own a 2017 Tesla Model S. Upon stopping abruptly, the front suspension control arm shattered. Fortunately, I was close to home and managed to limp back home. However, in the process, I shredded the tired on the affected wheel. Trying to schedule service through the Tesla app, the first available appointment was some three weeks in the future in Canada (the nearest service center). The car was undrivable, and I could not find a tow agency that would tow the car over the border. My other alternatives were Lynnwood or Bellevue. A tow of such distance would run well over $500. Fortunately, I found Rod’s Auto Care. I received an immediate appointment, and they secured the necessary parts overnight. The entire repair took less than 1 day. The car runs great. I can without hesitation, recommend their Tesla service.

    They tried telling me that my head gasket was blown and I would need to replace my engine and my turbo. Of course the tech that serviced my car couldn't see where the leak was coming from because he put a shop rag over that hose and left it in my car when he was done. You can clearly see the coolant residue from where the leak has been happening for a while. They replaced 3/8" oe hose clamps with 1/4" euro-style hose clamps and don't understand why that would cause problems. Cost me $220 for a diagnostic inspection, had another mechanic look at it and he diagnosed the problem and priced the parts from Napa within 20 minutes at no charge. Won't be going back to them again, and won't be recommending them to anyone else. They were great at first, but then they got rid of the counter guy who knew anything and they have been steadily falling off of a cliff ever since.

    Took it in for a vibration they said it was a drive axle so they put a new drive axle in and then test drove it and the vibration was still there they said it was a little better and that the motor mounts need to be changed I got it home put it on my lift and looked at the new drive axle they just put in it has the same movement that the old one had right at the transmission were that I told them it was moving before they assured me that was because the drive axle was wore out apparently that was a lie because I still have the same movement the vibration has gotten worse. I have it at another shop after the horrible excuse for a shop Rod's Japanese Auto is and Rod's MasterTech Auto is owned by the same person so I'm guessing it's the same over at that shop also they nickel and dime you and nothing ever gets fixed they lie, they don't tell you the true cause and so now I'm not only spent $1,300 at Rod's Japanese Auto the problem is not fixed and I'm being told I need a new transmission now just like I discussed with rods Japanese Auto counterman Hayden so watch out their scammers and I will be trying to go back and get my diagnostic fee of $250 back because they did not diagnose the problem.

    I was recommended Rod's by a friend for my Nissan as they specialize in Japanese cars. The diagnostics were thorough and found potential issues outside of the scope of my stated concerns about the vehicle, which was helpful. Make sure to check your past invoices though to see how recently certain work has been done as some things were recommended as needing replacement or repair simply because they were due. This included shocks I'd had replaced 5 months prior; despite including an image of the shocks they didn't seem to determine in the inspection that they were in good shape and not in need of repair. The final cost was about $100 more than the initial estimate because one part had to be "overnighted", presumably to finish by the day they'd suggested it would be finished; however I was not contacted during that process and asked if I was willing to wait an extra day or 2 to save that $100. They were kind enough to offer a free loaner vehicle while mine was in repair. Service was quick and they were patient and held my car pre repair for about half a day while I made some financial decisions. They offered a couple items which weren't in perfect shape but weren't super essential could be skipped since i wanted to save money, rather than declaring them all essential which would've made them more money. They also offer warranties on parts so long as you come back in for regular free check ups, which is a huge plus I haven't found at other shops.

Their diagnostic service that includes pictures of each part and when it'll need to be replaced is incredibly helpful as well as their outstanding service. I came in a few days ago with a stripped out screw on an essential motor part and they helped fix it and even gave me some pointers! Best auto shop!!!

    We had some vandalism of our 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid where the main power cables to the inverter were cut. This caused the vehicle to be totaled as the cables were not sold by Toyota separate from the transmission. Zach was able to get the used cables. His team installed them and reprogrammed the system when promised for substantially less than estimated price! Great job Zach and crew!!!!!

    Highly recommend this place. I had my car towed here after it broke down on the side of the freeway. They provided an entire portfolio of pictures with explanations of what needed to be fixed, as well as what might become an issue in the future.     Highly recommend! Trust worthy and great to work with! I can’t say enough about the care, kindness, and quality we received working with Zach and his team! We had so much work that needed to be done on our Mitsubishi eclipse, and they were so fast they got it done 3 days early! They were honest and transparent throughout.     I am feeling confident in this company. I am a brand new customer, and they were very straightforward and helpful about what my car needed in order to be winterized. I gave it four stars because I felt there should've been more communication as to when my car was going to be worked on. I had a schedule that day and the check up on the car got started quite late but I came in early. Had I known, I would've asked. It is probably on me. Having said that, they were very transparent about everything. Sean called this an "eyes on" appointment. In the end, all they need to do, at this time, was to change the oil and rotate the tires. Another cool thing they do is send PDFs of photos of the parts of the car that need to be "watched". So, they didn't do more than they needed to. They asked when I'd like to come in next, not pressuring me for the next check up appointment. So far, I recommend this company! Plus, the place is so darn quiet! Lovely.

    Hayden was my contact point at Rod's. He did a thorough job communicating with me about the diagnostics done on my Prius. I was supposed to have two diagnostics tests done on my vehicle, however, the technician found an issue in the first diagnosis and suggested not doing the second one to save me money as fixing the first issue could take care of the second. I am thankful for both their expertise and money saving advice. I will be back to Rod's for sure!

    Had my car towed here when it randomly died while I was driving. The shop determined the repairs were going to be quite extensive - far more than I was willing to invest.     I took my Lexus to rods to get my trunk fixed, they were pleasant in the beginning, however I feel they up charged me for the diagnosis of the particular issue. Additionally, while my car was being repaired I remained in contact with them and they were very communicative to begin. However, they then proceeded to lose the number I was contacting them on and because of this they didn’t inform me that my car was fixed until nearly a week later (car was done Thursday, Rods is closed Friday, Saturday, Sunday). I was only made -aware of my car being fixed the following Wednesday when I called as I didn’t hear from them for awhile. On a lighter note, the car they provided while mine was being repaired was very nice Subaru Outback and did its job well. Just my opinion, take it or leave it 😗

    Hands down the best auto shop I have ever taken my vehicle to. I've always been nervous when taking my car in due to the inexperience of the technicians and the lack of care they have for my property. That has NEVER been a fear of mine at Rod's. Everything from management to technicians/mechanics is flawless. They communicate with you and give you a chance to ask questions and feel comfortable with the work they are providing and what needs to be done in the future to keep your car in tip top shape. Brittany is always a pleasure to talk to and watching her with her team is something you don't find in most work environments. You see them interact with such respect towards each other.     Check out these 1 star reviews and a very similar approved BBB review stating a similar displeasure in a service quote. Somebody I know was quoted $1500 for tie rod replacements. A pair of oem tie rods are under $300 and they take about 15 minutes to change with a few wrenches and a floor jack at home. Knowing mechanics who have owned local service shops and dealership service managers, and my opinion is that the prices they charge are borderline unethical. Edit: in response to the owner: I have a right to express an opinion about a product or service. You are providing a “service” by quoting prices, and I am leaving an opinion based review of this service quote, which is not unfair just as leaving a review based on service at a restaurant is not unfair because it is a personal opinion. Also, living in an area is not a requirement for leaving a business review. I have gotten similar work done by friends who are service managers at large dealerships and who have owned service and transmission shops in Snohomish County for over 30 years and charged 25% of what you charge for the same work.

Can you send me this quote you have of inner and outer tie rods that amount to $1500? Because maybe you or your friend was mistaken.. Maybe it was a quote for the whole power steering rack? Anyone is free to price shop around at any time of their visit. We do not hard sell nor demand repairs being done at our shop. You are saying our prices are unethical yet you don't have a quote from us nor know if it was an actual quote for only the tie rods? & Prices for a business are based on a lot of things. What do you think we should charge ? Based off of the tools, equipment, maintaining that equipment, training technicians, living wages for technicians and service advisors, whats fair to the customer, and also fair to the buisness? what price would we have to charge in order to stay in business and provide the types of services we provide for our customers? We have a huge following of loyal customers. Our repeat customer % over the past 5 years is 80% current, 20% new. Curious to know what you think we should be charging?

    would not recommend this place. claims "transparency" - said they could not give me a quote prior to completed work as they could not predict what kind of issues they would run into. continued to spend time diagnosing absolutely everything on my truck claiming it needs replaced/maintenance as they didnt know when the last time everything was serviced. my truck is a 1998 tacoma, so since everything is old, everything needs replaced. keep in mind, all of this unnecessary diagnosing will end up being charged to me by the hour. over $1400 later, got my truck back to find out there were check engine lights on and truck ran worse than when i took it in. after taking it back and having them fix the issues, still had truck returned to me with loose bolts in engine bay. business card claims "clear quotes" and employee guaranteed a quality control test drive which neither were true. the genuine Toyota valve cover gasket costs $150. plus a pcv valve and some other gaskets/cam bearing end cap, lets say $300 total. job takes on average 3-4 hours. bill was $1440. you do the math.

    ****Get everything in writing.*** They will up sell you services claiming it will almost certainly fix your issues. When it fails to solve the problem they will shrug their shoulders and say “we’ll, we told you there was a very slight chance it won’t fix your issue”. When you confront them about it they will ban you from the business. They’re very friendly and helpful until you want answers as to why you spent $600 with no solution to your issue.

    Hi Ashley, I know this was originally a 5 star from you after your husband brought your Hyundai in. The last text messages to John was him telling us he was going to set up a time to come in and watch the camera recordings from the office. That was January 17, over 2 months ago. We did do everything in writing and with photos. When we went back on the camera we said word for word (I typed this as we listened to the recording which you can still come listen to if you want) "This is the first step and least expensive method, because worse case we would have to replace a CAT, and even for a non OEM you're looking at $1500-$3k". The fuel injection cleaning & de-carbon service was absolutely vital for your engine to receive anyways as it had never been done at 84,000 with a direct injection engine. Which was also explained to John. We also charged for diagnostics and PCV valve. All 3 jobs adding to $600. If you would still like to, you can come listen to the saved recording of how it was explained to John in the office since you were not here. Thank you and have a great weekend!

    Do not use Rod's for Hybrid repair! Initial quote was $1,700 to $2000 and 2 days to rejuvenate my Lexus GS 450 hybrid battery. They also indicated they could replace the cells if needed. 7 Days later and a quote for $4,900 to replace it with the brand new battery. They made me pay for the labor of $675 and I got nothing in return. Still have to replace the battery or cell's. If you can't replace the cells you shouldn't do the job! They also scratched up my leather seat, didn't notice it in the dark when I picked it up.

    Thank you Mikel for your honest feedback as we take all feedback as a learning curve and seriously. We apologize you have a negative experience and we would like to take the time to tell our side of the story. Mike came to Rod's in regards to his Hybrid Lexus having hybrid battery codes and requested a diagnosis. After a level 1 diagnosis was performed it was determined that a hybrid battery rejuvenation may be possible (this process saves the original battery pack or replacement of only a few cells) which costs around $1,800.00 depending on if the vehicle needed any cells which would not have been known until the battery had gone through a least one full cycle on the hybrid battery machine. Mike was updated multiple times about the delays and understood clearly. After the final test it was determined that only 12 modules out of 40 were savable which meant that the original plan of a hybrid battery rejuvenation was not possible at this point. Typically less than 1/4 of the pack requires replacement if anything needs to be replaced. (There are 240 cells on this vehicle). This is when the recommendation of a new hybrid battery pack (40 new modules) and a 3 year warranty was offered at the sum of $4,900, $2,000 cheaper than what Mike was quoted from the Lexus dealership. It was clearly explained to Mike that due to how many cells were bad this was the only option. Mike refused and requested to pick up the vehicle. This particular Lexus states that it takes 3.5 hours just to remove the hybrid battery which in cost is more than Mike was charged upon picking up his vehicle which was $668.00. Work that was performed on Mike's vehicle: removal of the hybrid battery, multiple testing cycles (technicians time) for data from hybrid battery on hybrid battery machine (about 3 hours), and re-installation of the hybrid battery for customer to pick up (per request) another 3.5 hrs. which totaled to what Mike originally agreed to around $1,800. Feeling compassion and understanding for Mike's situation of the failed rejuvenation attempt (which was clearly noted to Mike that it may not be possible to rejuvenate before we began the process) We reduced Mike's bill to $688.00 (our standard hybrid battery diagnostics- (for a prius-not a Lexus) to try to compensate the situation. Mike also had our loaner car the entire time we had his car at our shop so that he was able to go to work each day and not be without a vehicle.

    Was initially optimistic given this shop touts their specialization in Japanese cars for our subaru when our normal mechanic was too backlogged over the holidays. Reception was extremely friendly and welcoming, was reasonably confident it was going to be a good experience. I also appreciated the digital record tool they used for diagnosing the vehicle, a nice touch which included videos and photos of key problem areas. Our vehicle had a bad control arm bushing causing steering issues. Rod's quoted us a 4k minimum to address it, and recommended we do at least 6.5k of work to prevent premature wear, including replacing all struts front and rear, etc etc. Not having any experience with them prior to this, I felt it was worth getting a second quote before going forward, which is where it started to go south. When I communicated I'd like to do so, the vibe shifted, becoming audibly irritated at my decision. They quickly redirected to the vehicle being a safety concern on the road. Given the issue, there was some merit to this, despite having driven into to their shop that morning over 15 miles and planning to move it to another shop without highway driving about 3 miles away. They communicated they couldn't hand over they keys to move it unless it was towed citing the concern which is annoying but fine, a reasonable request. I paid for the diagnostic and called back to confirm aaa would be coming later in the day. Upon booking aaa, aaa called the shop to confirm I had paid debts before dispatching, and coordinating for their driver. Rod's told the aaa rep the keys would be under the driver side mat. When I arrived to meet the tow truck, no keys were to be found and the driver had to come back the next day. Again, very annoying but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that this was a simple miscommunication. Today after having the vehicle towed and assessed by my regular shop, they confirmed the bushing was indeed bad, but most of the other parts that had been listed in Rod's quote were in good working order. The difference in quote was 2k (50%) less than the bare minimum Rod's had quoted, and 4.5k (70%) less than they recommended. I again gave them the benefit of the doubt despite what the math was telling me (perhaps they are just being overly conservative) until I came here and read all the other comments with very similar experiences to mine. I can't speak to their quality of work as we had none performed and their diagnostic was detailed and exhaustive, but I would recommend a second opinion if you are at all questioning the scope of work being suggested to you.

    Joe, you are absolutely correct. After being open for over 20 years and with our collected 50+ years of experience we know to take care of both the cause, AND the effect of a very crucial safety concern. The control arms & bushings by the way from us are $1,763 parts & labor plus tax (plus the diagnostics). We recommended struts at the same time. The struts are over due, they are actually due for the 2nd set of struts (please check google or any search engine and ask how often your struts should be replaced, also check that rears should be done at the same time.. KYB is the typical main manufacturer for OE struts on Subaru's). The reason we do what we do is with our clients best interest in mind for longevity (NEVER a 'Band-Aid' fix). We KNOW only doing a control arm replacement is doing you a complete dis-service. I couldn't imagine doing your control arms and then having your struts wear them down again. This control arm issue isn't even a typical thing we see at all on Subaru's of your mileage (100K). Please be aware doing only the control arms is a replacement of the effect and not taking care, or even considering something caused them to fail. As far as towing it even just 3 miles, absolutely, your car was in critical safety concern for you , and others on the road. Could you imagine leaving our shop just to go "3 miles" and your wheel pulling out from under the car and putting you into oncoming traffic? We couldn't.... Its ALWAYS best to be safest. Also there is a very specific law RCW that states you can not drive on the car knowing you have an un-safe vehicle.

    I have used Rod's for both routine maintenance and bigger jobs like my head gasket. Each and every time they are professional, knowledgeable, and their service is top notch. I never have to wait weeks to get my car serviced and they take their time to thoroughly explain what services are needed now and what should be done in the future. As someone who doesn’t know cars that well, I appreciate their full diagnostics report that includes pictures. I have always been satisfied with their customer service and work. They even went out of their way to contact another service provider I had previously recieved services from and I was able to bring my car in and they fixed the issue at no cost. Bonus - they have a loaner car and have always allowed to me use it so my work day isn't interrupted. Go to Rod's for quality customer service and work!

    I have been a long time customer of this location. Besides the excellent service provided by Zach at the front desk, the people in the garage have never let me down on the speed at which they work. They have worked on my Lexus, two Acura's and my wife's Subaru. Although car work is expensive, I would rather spend a little more by bringing my cars here than anywhere else in Bellingham. I have never had a single problem with the quality of their work or with them not communicating everything they are doing and why they are doing it. For sure the only place I will bring my family's Japanese cars when they need service.

    We can't say enough good things about the quality people and the top notch service we received from Rod's Japanese Auto Care. 5 stars / A+++ / Highly recommended! In order to fully appreciate this rating, it is important to share some backstory. Our vehicle is unique to say the least. It's an imported Japanese RV - with a few systems converted to US standards, and others still in the original state. Parts have proven to be a nightmare challenge. This is where Sean, Zach, and the entire service team at Rod's really shined. Through much trial and error, and countless examples of creative, outside-the-box problem solving, we managed to upgrade our wheels and tires to US supported sizes. Communication and follow-up were critical during the project, and there was a great deal of back and forth between us and the staff. Each obstacle was met and handled, and it soon became clear that all involved cared about our situation in a very personal way. One critically important point to make is that safety was at the forefront of every decision - which included researching and ordering the correct parts, suggesting custom parts/fixes, and the labor to get it done. Overall, we were impressed by the professional and reliable service we received. I know this is long review but I feel there is much to talk about, especially when we had to leave our beloved "Lasercat" in the shop for several months.     We've been bringing our 2006 Subaru to Rod's since we bought it 4 years ago and discovered that the dreaded head gasket needed repair, something that added thousands to the price paid. We live in Friday Harbor, but took our car to Rod's on the advice of a local retired mechanic friend (who said no one on the island has the skills or equipment to deal with Subaru's properly). And as tough as that unanticipated expensive repair was to swallow, the unbelievably thorough job of diagnosing and communicating what the car needed took the edge off and ensured we would return for the regular maintenance that we're told guarantees the repair for the life of the car. So we have now been back for that regular maintenance and a couple repairs along the way for the last 4 years, and every time we are impressed by the quality of the work done, the communication, and the understanding and kindness of all the staff members. I've personally recommended Rod's to multiple friends both on the island and in Bellingham. Best "car repair shop" experience we've had in the 50+ years we've been owning and driving cars!

    Quality service, customer focused! My 2010 Toyota Prius engine was hosed and was replaced by Rod’s Master Autotech. Also had my struts replace and my car runs like new now! Answered a lot of questions I had to help me understand any details I wanted to know, and very thorough about listing out and prioritizing the items I needed to address to keep my car running smoothly to prevent extra damage and costs in the future. Let me do everything under my own schedule.

    Summary Statement: "A shop that is honest and friendly that offers guarantees of their work - done by COMPETENT mechanics who do more than just read codes. I have complete confidence in their work." After a few searches of places in the Bellingham area we discovered this shop - to which we have now had our daughter's car (attending WWU) serviced. The initial reason we took the car in was with respect to a problem she was having getting fuel into the 2013 Toyota Prius. This problem had occurred before and been "fixed" twice by two other shops (one of which was a Toyota Dealership). This shop did what the others failed to do - actually solve the problem causing it - not just replace a part to address the symptom. They did that by doing more than what a computer told them to do (with a guarantee that it would be fixed unlike the other places). In short, competent mechanics, whose actions are based on experience and thinking, are employed at this shop. We have had them do other maintenance/usual scheduled services and the work has been of high quality. We just had a major service done before my daughter drives to AK and back after this current term at WWU ends....it took a little longer than they expected and so they provided her with a loaner for four days. After picking it up she called me and said, "Dad, it feels like a completely different car - like it's new." She was very happy. I have found the people at this shop to be approachable (with respect to what can be done, what must be done, and doing things in stages that fit our budget), honest, competent and friendly. I have complete confidence in their work - which is important to this father who wants his daughter to have an uneventful (i.e. mechanical issues) trip up the AlCan highway. They are as well - given that they gave Portia a (written) guarantee that if anything they did fails anywhere it will be repaired at their expense. That's service I have not found elsewhere. As long as our daughter attends WWU her Prius will be serviced at no other shop.

    10/10 I would recommend this auto shop. I went there to get a leak in my sunroof fixed and they figured out the problem very quickly and we're so helpful and friendly!! One of the guys even installed my cabin light fixture for free. Sucks that it took my five years in Bellingham to finally learn about this place. Plus having good looking men fix your car is always a bonus.

    We recently had a misfire issue with our 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT & the mechanic shop we previously had our truck inspected at told us we needed a new engine. We were told that due to age and how severely overused the engine was that replacement of the engine is the only solution. Needing a second opinion I decided to bring it to Rod’s Master and from the beginning Jeffrey was confident they mechanics could find the problem. And sure enough they found that my engine was in good condition and what I need is decarbon & hot oil change. I saved myself 93% of the costs of what the other mechanic shop quoted. I highly recommend Rod’s Master!

    Very thorough and thoughtful inspection process that includes photos and explanations Zach and Sean took time to explain to me what was most important to do in my case, and why, when I asked for quotes for if we did two or three different scenarios, they also worked on that for me. Overall their service is great, they have a transparent way of letting you know what your car needs, and they were done so much faster than I anticipated. They also took time to answer my questions after my car was done.

    I was having issues with my transmission and needed a place that worked on European cars. I called them up and they were very friendly and helpful. They did a full diagnostic on the car and sent me a play by play with pictures, videos and explanations. I don't know much about cars and tend to get anxious so I found this very helpful. It included descriptions of what all the parts did and what could happen if they broke or if fluids weren't changed or ran out. They answered my questions in a manner I could understand without talking down to me. The repair ended up taking longer than anticipated (supply and shipping issues, not their fault at all) but they kept me updated on their progress and the nature of the delays. They also gave me some helpful information on regular car maintenance which I'd never thought to ask about. They are a locally owned buisness and were so helpful and friendly that I will absolutely go to them for all car maintenance and any future issues. I highly recommend them. Also, they cleaned my car, which I wasn't expecting, and gave me a goody bag with items from other local businesses which was delightful!

    I hardly leave reviews for places but I had such a nice experience I felt like I should share. Let me start off by saying if you’re just looking for a cheap temporary fix, Rods might not be the best choice for you. But if you’re looking for someone who actually genuinely cares and will only provide the best of the best service then this is the place to go! I ran into a few issues with my car and I called 11 places all around Bellingham who refused to take my car because I have an ignition interlock in it. I had called place after place with so many people shutting me down immediately all while being rude and not helpful as to where I could find someone who might take my car. FINALLY I found rods and Jeffrey was quick to accept my car and get me in within the next few days. Jeffrey actually listened to me about the issues I was having (unlike the many mechanics in bham who didn’t seem to care) and was from the jump ready to help me fix my Chevy Cruze. He jumped through a lot of hoops in order to get my car serviced due to my interlock. I genuinely felt bad because it all seemed so out of the way but he was so quick to make it seem like it really wasn’t an issue. He figured out what was making my car running a little funny along with some other things that could be fixed soon but never gave me any pressure to have it all done. My car had to be at the shop for a couple days so I was out of a car but he had offered his brother to give me a ride home and to and from work. Once I got my car back she was riding smoothly and just right again! It was such a great experience and I will 100% be back for whatever service I need next. Customer service has always been something that’s very important to me everywhere I go. I have never felt so respected and heard by anyone until I came to rods and met Jeffrey. Thank you so much Jeffrey and the rest of the crew! You guys are so awesome and I am so grateful!

    Best Auto Shop in Bellingham! They care about you and your vehicle, they are efficient and respectful and don't try and cheat you into sneaky non needed payments. They do the work you ask them to do and more! Letting you know what needs to be done and what is the cause of the problem and they fix it for a decent price.
